February 12, 2010

Abraham Lincoln’s motives behind the Emancipation Proclamation are debated passionately and endlessly. Was it the ultimate statement of a man who said, “If slavery is not wrong, then nothing is wrong”? Or was it the desperate act of a commander-in-chief who was losing a war?

Join us when Professor Paul Finkelman presents “Lincoln and Emancipation,” as he explores the complexities of this document and helps us better understand what President Lincoln attempted on January 1, 1863, the day it was issued.

One of our most distinguished legal historians, Dr. Finkelman serves on the faculty of Albany Law School. The author of over 25 books, including The Political Lincoln: An Encyclopedia (CQ Press, 2009), his noteworthy expertise on slavery, the Civil War, constitutional law and Early American heritage sets him apart as an internationally respected scholar. Learn more about him at www.paulfinkelman.com.
