In life l loved to see it wave,
And follow where it led,
But now my eyes grow dim - my hand
Would grasp its last bright shred.

Save the Flag of the 36th Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Your help is urgently needed in saving the Battle Flag of the 36th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This famous regiment fought in nearly every major engagement in the Western Theater, losing 204 men in battle out of 1,376 total enrolled. A three year regiment, the 36th was raised in Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lawrence, McHenry and Warren counties.

The Illinois SUVCW Camps 1 and 2, The Civil War Roundtable of Chicago, The Salt Creek Civil War Roundtable, and the DuPage County Historical Museum are working together to raise funds to preserve this valuable artifact, and are seeking donations for this effort. The estimate for complete conservation is $22,000, of which $10,000 has already been raised by the organizations listed above. The flag is currently being stored at the Illinois National Guard Museum in Springfield, Illinois.

ALL funds raised for this project will be used specifically for the preservation of this flag and any financial contribution will assist in completing this important work. All donations are tax deductible and can be mailed directly to the Illinois National Guard & Militia Historical Society Inc.:
